Horse riding is fun and a great way for you and your horse to stay in shape. The Historic Nelson Ranch offers
beginning horseback riding lessons for both Adults and Children from 4 years and older.
An experienced horseback riding lesson using a safe quiet horse is the best way to learn to ride
Our instructors check to make sure the lesson horse is suitable in personality and meets the level of ability for
the English or Western riders horseback riding skills. We have some suggestions for safe riding skills and to
help you prepare for your first riding lesson.
For your first lesson:
Riders are expected to wear appropriate riding safety apparel that includes boots with heels, heavy denim
jeans or riding breeches, and an ASTM approved riding helmet. These can be purchased at Tack Warehouse
in Woodland Ca
Get to the ranch early and observe other riders and horses. In the horse stable and tack area, riders can
become familiar with horses and also for learning their body language.
Beginning Riding Academy Classes :
The Historic Nelson Ranch Riding Instructors will teach the basic care of the horse from grooming to
handling, fitting horse tack and how picking out the horses feet. The horse riding class basic riding instruction
and horse lessons includes body positioning of the rider and horse. Horses riding safety is very important.
Riders learn everything from never standing behind a horse to how to see if a horse is lame. Riders in our
beginning riding academy classes will learn to saddle, groom and fit blankets. Class participants will learn
the use of rider and horse body language - calm reassuring movements around horses. For group horse back
riding lessons, riders will ride at the same speed of the least experienced horseback rider. Groups are limited
to no more than 5 riders.
The goal in the beginning riding classes is to learn basic horse riding skills that include balance and control
of the horse. English riding lessons are given using English jumping saddles and equipment. Western
horseback riding lessons are given on western saddles and using western horse riding equipment. Riders
will learn to mount the horse from a step on the left hand side of the horse. Horseback riding basics include
using the riding equipment and reins to steer the horse to guide them. As riders advance they will learn the
use of hand and leg coordination to turn and direct the hors by gently applying pressure on the side of the
horse.
